Il buongiorno che si vede stamattina

di Lorenzo Declich

Scrivo all’indomani del primo attacco americano sulla Siria*.

The strikes destroyed or damaged multiple ISIL targets in the vicinity of Ar Raqqah, Dayr az Zawr, Al Hasakah, and Abu Kamal and included ISIL fighters, training compounds, headquarters and command and control facilities, storage facilities, a finance center, supply trucks and armed vehicles.

Aggiunge che, oltre ad altri attacchi sull’Iraq contro IS:

has also taken action to disrupt the imminent attack plotting against the United States and Western interests conducted by a network of seasoned al-Qa’ida veterans – sometimes referred to as the Khorasan Group – who have established a safe haven in Syria to develop external attacks, construct and test improvised explosive devices and recruit Westerners to conduct operations. These strikes were undertaken only by U.S. assets.

“Khorasan” would be a great name for a terror group, with nearly unlimited potential for ominous mispronounciation. Sadly, it is not. It’s a word used by al-Qaeda (& others) for the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, where its top leadership sits. What has happened, if US intel is telling the truth, is that a group of AQ veterans have relocated to Syria to support AQ’s local franchise, Jabhat al-Nosra, and (this is the newsworthy part) to develop its capacity for international attacks. All this, apparently, on the urging of AQ’s core leadership. The “Khorasan group” thing comes from them being sent to Syria from “Khorasan” – that is, by AQ’s leadership in Pakistan – and presumably taking their orders straight from there. It’s not the name of a group and they’re not an independent organization. As described in reports so far, they’re a specialized working group inside or otherwise attached to Jabhat al-Nosra that seeks to use the training camps, resources & recruits that Jabhat al-Nosra controls in Syria to run global attacks for which AQ can then claim credit.

By the end of Tuesday, LCC were able to document 123 martyrs including 8 women, 7 children and 2 martyrs under torture: 57 martyrs were reported in #Aleppo 50 of them from Jabhet Al-Nusra were martyred by International Alliance Combats’s airstrike on Al- Muhandisen Suburbs; 29 in #Idlib including 10 civilians and 11 from Jabhet Al-Nusra were martyred by International Alliance Air Combats’s airstrikes on #Kafrdryan; 22 in #Damascus and its Suburbs; 7 in #Homs including 6 Bedouins were martyred by by International Alliance Air Combats’s airstrikes on Shaa’r mount; 4 in Dier Ezzor; 3 in #Daraa and 1 in #Hama.

LCC has also documented 72 air strikes by the U.S. air combats accompanied with Qatari, Saudi, Jordanian, Emirati and Bahraini warplanes at several Syrian cities and towns. #Raqqa city witnessed 7 air strikes that targeted the Municipality Building at the center of the city, the Horsemanship Building and checkpoint western of the city, the Vanguards Camp southern of the city, the National Security Building, National Hospital of Raqqa City, 5 air strikes at the Tabaqa Military Airport, 3 air strikes at Tal Abyad city, 3 others that targeted the 93rd Brigade and its surroundings in Ain Essa area and also 3 air strikes at the National Hospital in Maadan. Moreover, there were 7 air strikes at the Mezra and Boghaz villages in Aleppo province, 2 others at Bafdeek and Jirin villages in Kobane and 4 air strikes at the Muhandiseen suburbs which targeted positions for Jabhat AlNusra militias.
In Idlib, the International Alliance air combats targeted the Kafar Daryan village with 3 air strikes whereas in Deir Ezzor they launched 22 air strikes at BoKamal city. Additionally, they conducted 7 air strikes at Tal AlMilih area in the village of AlTabny, 1 air strike at Tabous Mountain in Shmitiyeh area and 3 air strikes at the Shaer Mountain in Palmyra, Homs.

4. Passiamo all’efficacia degli attacchi.

According to our sources, Islamic State (IS), the former ISIS or Daesh, is girding itself for the US–led coalition offensive that it is expecting at the beginning of October. The organisation has begun building bunkers and, like Hezbollah and Hamas (IOL 717, IOL 718), it has been burrowing tunnels throughout the territories it currently controls. Lorries and construction equipment are in use round the clock in and around Mosul and in the Syrian province of Raqqa.

Meanwhile, some of the 30,000 Daesh fighters have been told to discreetly blend into the local population either side of the border. Islamic State is keeping silent about its defence strategy while trying to flush out rival rebel groups that could side with the coalition. The bomb attack in Idlib against Ahrar al-Sham (see p.2) and the assassination attempt against Ahmed Issa Zakaria, the chief of the Souqour al-Sham Brigade (the Falcons of the Levant) were part of this strategy.

  1.  c’è chi approva gli attacchi ma chiede che fra gli obiettivi ci sia anche il regime di Bashar al-Asad (e, da ciò che vedo, mi sembra che questa richiesta non verrà neanche presa in considerazione viste le evidenze di contatti fra regime e americani nell’imminenza degli attachi);

Wednesday started in Syria with 14 martyrs including 7 martyres were reported by toxic gases and a child: 7 martyrs were reported in Damascus and its Suburbs by airstrikes with toxic gases on Adra; 3 martyrs in Aleppo; 2 martyrs in Homs; a martyr in Idlib and a martyr in Hama.
